The Prophet and Kaplan meet, and at each meeting the Prophets produces one of nine seals similar to the one Kaplan received. America is the country that once had a covenant with God that it has abandoned, and God is sending the same harbingers to warn America of its impending destruction. The Prophet tells Kaplan that this is all happening again, in the modern day. As long as Israel followed God’s commands and was faithful, God protected the nation against exterior threats, but as Israel fell away from faith God was angered and sent nine warnings, or harbingers, over the course of years to give Israel a chance to repent.

The Prophet tells Kaplan that Israel was a nation blessed by God, founded in an explicit covenant with God. The Prophet tells Kaplan about the fall of ancient Israel and the ten lost tribes. On the third attempt, the Prophet is there again, and Kaplan begins recording their conversation. Upset and confused, Kaplan leaves, but he cannot get the Prophet out of his thoughts, so he returns to the same spot three times. The Prophet knows about Kaplan’s seal and produces one just like it, telling Kaplan he has to give him an important message, using his name even though Kaplan didn’t offer it. Kaplan tells Goren that he was disturbed by its arrival, and went for a walk on the beach to think, where he encountered a man he now believes to be a prophet sent to explain everything to him. He tells Goren that it all began when he received an ancient seal-a piece of clay with inscriptions carved into it, used in the past to seal important documents-from an anonymous source.

Goren is skeptical and mocks him, but Kaplan is unperturbed. Kaplan tells Goren that he has discovered an ancient mystery that predicts the future of the United States of America. The narrative jumps back and forth between events in the past that Kaplan is relating to Goren and the conversation between them in the present. The story is framed by an ongoing conversation between journalist Nouriel Kaplan in a meeting with Ana Goren, a powerful publishing and media executive. The Harbinger uses fiction as a framework to allow Cahn to introduce his research, theories, and religious views in an entertaining and non-threatening way. In it, a journalist is approached by an unnamed prophet who explains the connection between ancient history, a specific bit of scripture from the Bible (Isaiah 9:10), and recent events in the United States that warn of its impending destruction. Although a work of fiction, Cahn intended the book to be taken seriously as a work of biblical scholarship and a warning of events to come. The Harbinger is a novel by Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, published in 2012.
