These juvenile boot camps are a heartbreaking reality and a well-kept secret. I think this is one of the most important books I’ve read, because it is based in reality and lists references for where the author took some of the ideas he presented in the story. The subject matter was difficult for me to read about because A) I feel very strongly about treating people kindly especially when the ratio of power is uneven and B) I also feel strongly about free will and making good choices or owing the consequences for making poor choices. This book was painful to read, not because it was poorly written, on the contrary, it was very well written and the characters were vividly portrayed.
